Practical ways to strengthen your home security

When an alarm sounds, the minutes that follow matter. Understanding the usual sequence helps you stay calm, and helps your security provider reach you faster. Exact procedures vary between providers, but most follow the same pattern.
How the process typically works
- Signal: your alarm sends a signal to the monitoring centre.
- Verification: an operator tries to reach you, usually by phone, to confirm whether the alarm is genuine.
- Dispatch: if the alarm is not cancelled with the correct password, or cannot be verified, a reaction vehicle is sent to the property.
- On-site check: the officer inspects the perimeter and premises and reports back.
- Follow-up: you are told the outcome and anything that needs your attention.
What you should do
- Answer the monitoring centre's call and give your password calmly.
- If you are at home and fear an intruder, move somewhere safe and let the officers respond. Do not investigate alone.
- Keep your emergency contacts and password up to date with your provider.
How to reduce false alarms
- Make sure everyone in the household knows how to arm and disarm the system.
- Check that doors and windows are fully closed before arming.
- Keep sensors clean and backup batteries charged.
- Test the system regularly, and tell your provider before you do.
A system that is tested, understood and backed by a reliable response is far more useful than one that is merely installed.
