Armed or unarmed guards: which does your site need?

Choosing between armed and unarmed security officers is one of the first decisions in any guarding contract. There is no universal answer. The right choice depends on what you are protecting and what you are protecting it from.

Start with a risk assessment

List your assets, your hours of operation, any cash or high-value stock on site, and your history of incidents. Note how isolated the site is and how quickly outside help could reach it. This picture drives every decision that follows.

When unarmed officers are enough

Unarmed officers provide a visible, professional presence that deters opportunistic crime, controls access and reports incidents. They suit many offices, schools, residential entrances and retail stores, where the main goals are deterrence and awareness.

When to consider armed officers

Sites with high-value stock, cash handling, remote locations or a history of violent crime may need armed protection. Armed officers can respond with greater force, but that comes with greater responsibility. They must be properly licensed, competent and closely supervised.

Questions to ask your provider

Many sites use a mix: unarmed officers on the gate or the floor, backed by an armed reaction vehicle for serious incidents.
