How to choose a security company you can trust

Retail businesses face a particular mix of risks: theft, cash handling, busy entrances and staff who work alone at opening and closing. The good news is that a handful of sensible habits reduces most of them.
Make security visible
A uniformed officer at the entrance deters opportunistic theft and reassures both customers and staff. Visible signage and clear camera coverage add to the message that your store is watched and looked after.
Protect your cash
- Bank regularly, and vary the times and routes.
- Keep tills at low levels and use a drop safe where possible.
- Never count cash in view of customers.
Use your layout
- Keep sightlines clear from the tills to the entrance.
- Place high-value items where staff can see them.
- Use mirrors or cameras to cover blind spots.
- Keep the entrance uncluttered so people can come and go safely.
Train your team
- Agree clear opening and closing procedures, and follow them every day.
- Teach staff to stay calm in a robbery, cooperate and avoid resisting.
- Encourage staff to report suspicious behaviour early.
- Keep a written log of incidents so patterns become visible.
Know your response plan
Display the numbers staff should call, and make sure everyone knows who responds and how quickly. A guard on the door is stronger when backed by a reaction team.
